Frame Feature: Angled Cable Guide and Brake Mounts!
One of the main ideas behind Sunday is to listen to what riders are demanding and this idea has been demanded for a long time. Both the cable guide and the brake mounts are angled to provide a straighter cable route which allows for better braking. The angles created by a lot of frames and certain brakes does not allow for the best braking potential. Even if your brakes have angles built in them, there still is an angle thus the loss of braking power. This is all very ironic because most of the team doesn’t ride brakes and I have been getting demands for brake mountless frames! Soon to come?
Overview of the angles on the cable guide and brake mounts. There are slight angles in the alignment, but imagine if traditional brake mounts and cable guides were used? Then there would be drastic angles in the alignment instead of the slight ones here.
Closeup of the angled cable guide. There is still enough room to have the barrel adjuster all the way out without interference from the top tube.
Closeup of angled brake mounts. It is difficult to really see how much the angle is, but note the distance to the seat stay between either end of the brakes.
Team Update and other news 5/4/06
First, let’s start with some product news. THE FRAMES WILL BE OUT IN THE US BETWEEN MAY 20TH AND 26TH! Just wanted to emphsize this. In other news, Padded Cell has become the new distributor for Sunday in the UK. So if your shop doesn’t have Sunday, tell them Padded Cell has it.
While it has been awhile since our last team up date, so let’s get started.
Vinnie Sammon is presently on the Red Bull Mean Streets 2 in California, teaming up with Edwin De Larosa from last year’s.
Ian Schwartz broke his wrist in New York City while on a trip with the guys from Dan’s Comp. Roller coaster grind gone way wrong, I think he is down to 5 weeks to go. Hopefully his electro-shock therapy gagetry thing that he uses to help heal his wrist doesn’t keep him up at night.
Eli holding Jeff Z’s focus card in Decatur Georgia, while Karl fakie hops to safety in the same county.
Eli Platt after doing a tailwhip down the big 4 in Atlanta is finishing up his final(?) quarter of college.
Speaking of finishing up school, Karl Poynter is doing the same thing, but with high school.
Mike Hoder got a job washing semi trucks on the other side of the state of Washington. This doesn’t sound too crazy, but when he commutes 5 hours to work it is. Luckily he only does it every so often. Will Mike have front brakes on his bike soon? Will he do the biggest 360 ever real soon, just maybe.
Jim Cielencki finished up the shop’s first video Hey Man Woo! Now if we can just get it out that would be awesome. The video’s release can only be blamed on the Buffalo Sabres, the more they play then the more it is delayed. The Sabres vs Senators should be good!!!!
In the UK, some rumors have been flying about Joe Cox riding for someone else, but the rumors got it mixed up because his brother got picked up. Mike Taylor won best trick at the most recent Battle Royale in Liverpool by doing a feeble to barspin on a round rail. Check out DFTU to see some photos. I think the next one is in Glasgow.
Christian Ziegler sent some photos of him from Germany along with an Morning Fork ad he is in. The photos are shot by Christoph Ebsen. He is getting married on May 12th, so congradulations to him and his new wife.
Frame Feature: DROPOUTS of Death!
Sorry for the sarcastic title, but someone equated these dropouts to death which is retardedly funny to me. Okay, there has been a lot of interest, debate and speculation on the internet about the Sunday frame’s hollow dropouts. Why would somebody make a thicker dropout when everyone is going to thinner ones? This is simple because when you thin the dropout from a 1/4 inch to 3/16 inch, you end up reducing the strength by about 40%. That is a great reduction in strength for a simple 1/16 of an inch in weight savings. So what happens when you add a 1/16 of an inch to a 1/4 inch dropout, but make them hollow? You get a dropout that is twice the strength and the same weight as a normal dropout.
Outside and inside views. Please not the tapered “Sunday” stamped caps on the outside and the tapered seat and chain stays on the inside create a smooth transition to the dropout. Just super clean with smooth lines.
Peg side clearance and non-peg/axle clearance. Small and out of the way is what these dropouts are trying to achieve. I am pretty sure that this has been achieved.
So, now you are wondering how in the world is a hollow dropout constructed? I can’t fully divulge the process, but let me just stress that the dropout is made from forged parts to make a hollow structure that saves weight and is stronger than a basic “plate”. Nearly all non-hollow dropouts are simply cut from plates, there isn’t any forging or machining done just simple cutting out like a Christmas cookie. Naysayers out there should consider that lots of engineering structures use fabricated hollow parts. Some examples are airplane wings, car chassis members and suspension arms, motorcycle frames, super expensive mountain bike swing arms etc. These examples can be very strong for their weight provided the detail is engineered right… and these ARE engineered right.
To show the dropout width to scale.
Specs
Width 8mm roughly equal to 5/16 inch.
Material-Forged 41Thermal 4130 chromoly.
Size-Small enough for a 1.5 inch diameter peg to fit cleanly without any dropout hangover, so no cutting is needed to fit your dropout to the peg.(See above)
Internally-Walls surround all the outside edges with support across the dropout to prevent crushing.
Axle Slot-14mm

Production Frame Sample arrives!!!
Well, it has been really busy up here with the arrival of the frame production sample on Friday. After checking it over, it was off to Blackout to get some pictures taken for catalogs and what not. As soon as I got back to Buffalo, I immediately put it together with no problems. The Mid bottom bracket actually pressed right in with only the aid of a piece of wood and everthing else went together without any troubles. The frames are on the way and should arrive sometime around the third week in May, sorry but this stuff takes time.
Here is a photo moments after the frame arrived, note the colorful frame box that you will see with every frame.
This is one of the colors the frame will come in with the others being gray and red. Note the freshly painted wall behind me…no check the graphics and lack of gyro tabs on this sample. Come back tomorrow to see if I am brakeless or have a straight cable when I post my bike check.
Yes, it sure does say 41Thermal right on the brake bridge. So what this means is the whole frame is 41Thermal not just the brake bridge. Now you are going to wonder about the warranty. The frame is going to have a LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY against manufacturers defects judged on a case by case basis. So if you have an old frame and throw it against a tree to get a new one, I can’t help you.
Lots of new stuff
Some more late news, all the colors in have arrived over at Blackout Distribution which is Sunday’s distributor in the US. Everything arrived on Thursday, so it should be available soon at your local bike shop or at any of the mail order places including EmpireBMX, StaffBMX, Dan’s Comp and Albes.
Morning forks in Red, Green and of course Black.
Night forks in Red, Green and Black.
Color bars in green and black.

Okay so here are the bars with the proper sticker, the last one was a test with the white background. Here is what will be available in probably less than two weeks.
Night Forks with 990 mounts
As promised, here is a photo of the new Sunday Night Forks with 990 mounts which are only coming in black that are now available through Blackout Distribution. There new site is suppose to be up, but all I see is the old site here– BLACKOUT. A lot of requests for forks with 990 mounts have been taken, so now Sunday is fulfilling the need.
Some other Sunday news is that the forks and all 3 bars are now coming in colors which are the same colors as the frame except the gray. Bars will be black, green and red with some limited edition chrome Triumph bars coming in the near future. Okay so that all might be a little confusing, so let me clarify. Frame colors are gray, red and green while bar and fork colors are black, red and green.
New Colors and Trip update!
Hey here are some photos of the Triumph and Tudor bars in colors. These are the only photos I have at the moment, but Color bars, Morning forks and Night forks are all coming in these colors which are incidently the same colors as the frame. These should be available in about 2 weeks, so be on the look out.
Sunday going south update, well we all survived the trip, I think I got some wind burn because it was still cold in Georgia. It was our first team trip and it was good to see everyone get along with each other. For me it was weird because you pick a bunch of guys for a team and you hope they get along, well I can say they did. It was also interesting seeing the different ways each guy views what we come across. From Ian’s roll back lines, Karl’s tech, Vinnie’s new age rail moves to Hoder and Eli killing everything, I can honestly say that I am really psyched for the video to come out. Hopefully see it by the fall!
Sunday going South!!!
Right now Vinnie Sammon is putting his bike together in the back of the shop then we are getting my generator and we are off to Ohio. We are meeting everyone at Ian and Eli’s house in Columbus and then we are off to the south. Looking for Crunk Juice and the Yin Yang Twins, but we will probably just ride a bunch of spots that are real famous in the skate world. The weather looks sunny, but we might be looking for real warm weather so that means Florida. Who knows, but I know we are going to Georgia so look out?
Metro Jam
Hey, sorry for the lack of updates, but we have been busy. Right now, we are getting ready to drive up to Toronto for Metro Jam. Karl Poynter flew in last night, well barely flew in. His flight was 5 hours late due the storm In New York, he sat in the plane on the runway for 6 hours! That sucks, but I am glad he made alright. Ian Schwartz is driving up in a little bit from Columbus and will meet us in Toronto. See you in Toronto!
